What are statin-induced muscle symptoms? What are they, and what can be done about them?
According to the Japanese Atherosclerosis Society's Statin Intolerance Clinical Guideline1), the number of statin intolerance cases in Japan is reported to be 0-10%/year, but there are only a few reports with observation periods longer than several years. Analysis mainly from postmarketing surveillance suggests that adverse events that are grounds for discontinuation include muscle symptoms, abnormal CK levels, and liver enzyme. In addition, it is estimated that adverse events often occur early in the treatment period, within the first 12 weeks of administration. However, data on adverse events in Japanese patients are scarce. In this issue, symptoms caused by statins are explained, with the 2022 ACC Expert Consensus.
